Friend,

As we begin this busy Election Day, I would like to remind you to vote, if you haven't done so already. Your opinion and vote matter!

We were deeply saddened to hear of Travis Roy’s passing. He has positively impacted countless individuals’ lives and was an ambassador for the SCI community. Travis was also a frequent volunteer with the GBC as a visitor to newly injured individuals. He will be missed.

I would like to take a moment to express my deep appreciation to you for making the Greater Boston Chapter what it is today. Whether you are a sponsor, donor, volunteer, Chapter member, or serve on the Board of Directors, you have made a difference in our organization. Your support and engagement has allowed us to expand our programming to reach more members than ever before. Thank you for joining us in making a difference and improving the quality of life of individuals living with a spinal cord injury or disorder.

We hope you will join us at our Virtual Fundraiser and Awards Presentation on Thursday, November 12th at 8pm to hear about all that we have been up to over the past year. We will also present this year's honorees and the 2nd Annual Elmer Bartels Leadership Award! Click here for more information.

With COVID-19 causing people to cancel their Thanksgiving plans with family and friends, this year we are offering a Virtual Meetup on Thursday, November 26th, 1:00-6:00 pm. Join us for some good conversations with great company!

We hope to see you at one of our virtual events!

MBTA Forging Ahead Service Changes and the SCI Community The MBTA’s Forging Ahead initiative will be making some hard choices about transit service cuts and system redesign to cope with COVID-related budget shortfalls. The Forging Ahead team plans to prioritize equity by preserving service that transit-critical populations like those with disabilities depend on. But to do so, they need to know what services you use, where you take them, and whether trade-offs would work for you. For example, if the bus stop or route most convenient to you is eliminated, could you access a different nearby stop or route? In November, the Forging Ahead team will be developing a set of service change proposals for their governing board to vote on in early December. So take this opportunity to hear from their Community Liaisons about possible changes and how they may affect you... ask your questions... and provide your input! Click here to join us!

A Good Read

Spotlight on Vent Users

You'll be surprised where Boston ranks. Hint: It's not good...

"It took a global pandemic to make ventilators a trending topic of discussion, but for thousands of people, they were part of daily life long before COVID-19 and coronavirus entered the common lexicon. Loa Griesbach started using one 18 years ago because swelling on her brainstem after a C5-6 injury impaired her breathing. Chris Tango’s vent life also began 18 years ago after an uncommon non-traumatic demyelinating event at the base of his brain. Jesse Collens joined the club 11 years ago when a botched front flip left him with a fractured cervical vertebra. Unlike the common images on the news of sickly people confined to hospitals or nursing homes, all three of these vent users have figured out how to get out and about and enjoy their lives, and while COVID-19 has slowed their roll, they are looking to getting back to making the most out of life with a vent."
