Friend,

Welcome to September! We are looking forward to this month as it is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month! We have some great virtual events planned, including SCI Awareness Day on Wednesday, September 16th, 12:00-1:00pm. While we usually gather at the State House for this event, this year we will meet on Zoom to hear from Dr. Ruby, founder of Massachusetts Walks Again, and the researchers who received funding for various SCI studies. Register here and plan to join us!

We are also excited to announce the addition of a new virtual discussion group to our current programming! Join us TODAY, and every Tuesday, 12:00-1:00pm, for Lunch & Learn: Nutrition & SCI. Each week, a nutritionist will join us as we discuss important nutritional topics, share recipes, and watch culinary kitchen demos by individuals with SCI/D!

Please Save the Date for our first ever Virtual Fundraiser: Thursday, November 12th, 8:00-9:00pm. More information to come soon!

You will notice that we made some format changes to this newsletter. We hope that this condensed format allows you to easily access and navigate the important content that is of most interest to you! The content remains the same but instead of full articles, there will be teasers with buttons to click that will direct you to the full article on either our website or other websites. We would love to hear your feedback! Reply to this email or send us an email here.

We hope to see you soon at one of our virtual events!

Sincerely,

Heather Wood

A Good Read

Redefining Possible Revisited

This months Good Read is from New Mobility. An article written by Seth McBride about Bear Gutierrez a Pulitzer Prize Winner (above).

"In 2015, Craig Hospital commissioned Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Bear Gutierrez to shoot portraits of SCI/D survivors who had gone through its rehabilitation programs. The series he produced is striking for its creativity and its illustration of our community’s strength and diversity.

We’re excited to share a few of our favorites, along with updates on what the people in the photos have been up to..."

SCI Watch

A Netflix documentary about the Paralympic games and how they impact a global understanding of disability and diversity.

My Take: I thought this was an amazing documentary on the past and present of the Paralympics. It is well directed and strikes a "cord" with the athlete in me. The stories the athletes tell are at first heartbreaking, but you soon see how these amazing humans overcame what seemed to be impossible. You'll definitely be motivated to get out of your house and better yourself after seeing this. I love that Netflix is bringing attention to so many stories about disability life: the good the bad and the ugly. Overall this is well worth the watch!

I give it 5 Vertebrae
