Friend,

On July 26, 1990, former President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA passed to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. If you are not familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act or what it has done for those with disabilities, check it out here. The ADA was a monumental achievement for all Americans with disabilities and this year we celebrate its 30th Anniversary!

As part of celebrating the ADA each year, the Greater Boston Chapter reflects on our organization's achievements and also determines what else we can do to further improve the rights and lives of individuals in the SCI/D community.

This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to celebrate in person like we usually do on Boston's City Hall Plaza. Instead, we invite you to join us in celebrating the ADA by using #thankstotheADA or #ADA30 when you go to any location or establishment that is accessible to you. Visit www.ADAanniversary.org for more ideas on how you can celebrate this year.

We still have KN95 masks to distribute to our members in need. Due to the limited amount of masks received, individuals will be provided masks on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to receive free KN95 masks from our Chapter, please email us at info@sciboston.org with the subject line "Masks" and include the following information:

  • First & Last Name of Person with SCI
  • Mailing Address
  • Phone #
  • Injury Level
  • Date of Injury

Please allow a minimum of one week to receive your masks. You can also request masks through the BCIL here!

We hope you all had a Happy 4th of July! Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Heather Wood

Advocacy

Keep up-to-date on MassHealth public hearings here. Additionally, MassHealth is resuming the workgroups they had started to form before the pandemic hit – one on wheelchair repairs and one on absorbency product quality. These virtual workgroups will function to inform MassHealth of the issues people are experiencing with wheelchairs and absorbency products and to come up with solutions to these problems. If you use a wheelchair or absorbency products and are interested in participating in one or both of these workgroups, please contact Harry Weissman hweissman@dpcma.org or Eviva Khane ekahne@bostoncil.org

Virtual Advocacy Series

Join United Spinal Association for their 3-part Virtual Advocacy Series in June and July to discuss the challenges of, lessons learned from and disability rights impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
