Make Massachusetts Accessible! (AAB legislation) Approved by Committee!

If you’ve been following our advocacy efforts over the last year you know that passing this legislation which will increase accessible and adaptable housing and workplaces in Massachusetts has been a high priority for the GBC and the disability rights community. We are happy to announce that it was approved by the committee just before the February 5 deadline! The legislation moves to the Ways and Means Committee in both houses of the legislature.

We now are planning the final push to get the legislation passed and signed by the governor by July. This will be a challenge. We face some formidable opposition from the commercial building developers and owners. We will be sharing our plans to Make Massachusetts Accessible soon. With your help we will succeed!

Please contact Chris Hoeh if you have questions or want to be more involved in this effort.

PT – 1 (Mass Health Transportation Program)

Chris Hoeh has joined representatives of disability rights organizations meeting with high levels in the state government to address fundamental flaws in this program that provides transportation for MassHealth members to and from medical appointments. This work is ongoing and we continue to look for people who have used the P T – 1s. If you are interested in participating or to get more information please contact Chris Hoeh

Spinal Source: Wheels of Justice

We had a wonderful group of advocates at yesterday's Spinal Source to watch the documentary Wheels of Justice. Thank you to Svetlana from the Disability Law Center and our Advocacy Rep Chris for motivating us all to get more involved. To learn more about our disability advocacy efforts and to watch the trailer of Wheels of Justice click here. The full documentary will be available to the public soon! The full documentary will also be shown at the RealAbilities Film Festival.

Here is a great article that New Mobility published about the adventure that is, online dating. Click here to read it! Who knows, it might help you find the love of your life!

SCI Watch

SCI Watch is a new section of Chapter Chatter were we will make suggestions on movies, documentaries, internet videos, or TV shows to watch that are either about SCI/D directly or other disabilities that are inspiring, educational, and/or entertaining. If you know of something that you think our members would like to watch please send ryan@sciboston.org an email with the name and why you think is should be seen.

The Theory of Everything

When this movie was first released, I thought it was going to chronicle much more of Stephen Hawking's (played by Eddie Redmayne) achievements, but it's much more of a biopic love story of his marriage to Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). To me, the most beautiful part of the story was how Stephen and Jane communicated and how one word, "love", changed Stephen's mind of dealing with his diagnosis alone and ultimately fighting to continue living with his disability with Jane by his side. Eddie disappeared in to his role as the brilliant Theoretical Physicist and exposed the raw emotion that one goes through with such a prognosis.

This award winning drama will suck you in because of the chemistry the two leads have. Despite being much more dramatized for the big screen compared to the books and reality it's based on, it does have a lot of honesty about the disability during that time period and some of the strain it puts on relationships.

In my opinion, a great movie to sit down and watch with your significant other on Valentine's day. But watch this as a loosely-based-on-a-true-story not a true-to-life biopic. Still, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
