Friend,

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and healthy. While spring has officially sprung, COVID-19 has us feeling some serious cabin fever. We at the GBC have changed our approach for providing support to the spinal cord injury and disorder (SCI/D) community. Rather than providing in-person discussion groups and 1-on-1 peer mentoring, we are meeting virtually as well as on the phone and via email. Whichever way it is done, we are happy to continue helping our community any way possible.

We hope you will join us at our Virtual Spinal Rap discussion group this Thursday, 4/9, on Zoom at 4pm EST. Engage in an open discussion about everything involving life with SCI/D. We invite everyone living with an SCI/D and their family members and friends to participate. Please email us to RSVP and receive the meeting password to login to Zoom. This virtual group is a great way to have contact with the outside world while we are all stuck at home.

In case you missed it, we postponed our annual fundraising gala to Saturday, November 14, 2020. Joey Voices, comedy singing impressionist, will still provide the entertainment. Be sure to save the date! More information to come in the months ahead.

Remember that no one needs to go through these uncertain times alone. We are here for you. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need support or resources.

Sincerely,

Heather Wood

Attention!!

We have switched to a new email address! For many years we have used AOL services and for various reasons we have been exploring other options. We switched to G-Suite for Nonprofits in January and are excited to use the tools Google offers. We ask that you add our new email to your address book, because all of our future emails will come from info@sciboston.org.

A Good Read

GBC Blog: Pressure Wounds

According to Christian Kirman MD, "Patients with neurological impairments have pressure injuries occur with an incidence of 7-8% annually, with a lifetime risk estimated to be 25-85%. Moreover, pressure injuries are listed as the direct cause of death in 7-8% of all individuals with paraplegia; these individuals also have the highest recurrence rate (80%). In persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) and associated comorbidity, the incidence of pressure injuries is in the range of 25-66%"

Those are some really scary numbers! We interviewed three of our peer mentors about their experiences finding, diagnosing, caring for, and preventing their own pressure sores. Read about their experiences in this month's blog entry and learn valuable lessons about why getting a pressure sore is so detrimental to the SCI/D community.

SCI Watch

SCI Watch is a new section of Chapter Chatter were we will make suggestions on movies, documentaries, internet videos, or TV shows to watch that are either about SCI/D directly or other disabilities that are inspiring, educational, and/or entertaining. If you know of something that you think our members would like to watch please send ryan@sciboston.org an email with the name and why you think is should be seen.

Crip Camp

Ryan's review:

100% on Rotten Tomatoes! Need I say more? While watching this Netflix documentary about Judy Heumann and the rest of the Camp Jened participants, I felt all the feels that I felt when participating at Empower SCI (a similar program for individuals with SCI)! This documentary was a visceral experience for me. The honesty about disability that the director captured is humbling. But more importantly, it showed that the people who make up the disabled community are humans that live, think, breathe, love, feel, and dream just like everyone else. And that's how we want to be treated! It shows just how fierce Judy Heumann is and how strong of a force the disabled community can be when we combine our voices. By the time you're done watching this, you will want to grab your picket signs and march to the State House to fight for our rights to be human.

I give it vertebrae!
