How does your donation make a Difference?

Every year, our programs and reach expand to meet the need of those with SCIs and their families. Many activities involve a combination of staff and volunteers; volunteers logged over 3000 hours over the past 2024-2025 fiscal year in service to SCIboston! Together, we:

• Connected 22 new individuals to receive peer or family mentoring services, and maintained mentoring relationships with scores more.
• Ran 35 distinct virtual support groups per month tailored to different needs in our community, including: the newly injured; family members & friends of those with SCI; young adults; women with SCI; men with SCI; wives & partners of men with SCI; Spanish speakers; those with SCI at all ages/stages; and a nutrition group in partnership with Spaulding dietitians. About 300 individuals attend one or more groups each month, and in fact our groups are so popular that we’ve had to restrict participation to those residing in New England.
• Held weekly Saturday afternoon in-person support groups, in combination with room visits upon referral from Spaulding staff, on the inpatient SCI floor at Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown; 85 unique individuals and family members attended one or more group sessions.
• Provided Saturday Education Series webinars where almost 100 participants learned from and asked questions of local experts on a variety of topics: Keeping Skin Healthy After SCI; Adaptive Sports, Recreation and Fitness; Peer Mentoring; and Getting Started with Advocacy. We record these sessions and refer those new to SCIboston to our YouTube channel library. 
• Hosted a psychologist-led, 6-session virtual coaching program for 10 individuals on Resilience and Adaption After SCI.
• Held 9 social events, including virtual and in-person holiday socials, seasonal outings, and the annual Gala. 
• Helped 24 individuals through our SCI Transition Program, which works intensively with those who have been discharged to a skilled nursing facility but have the capability to live in the community.
• Published monthly general and advocacy newsletters, and sent weekly emails highlighting upcoming groups and events, to a roster of approximately 2,500 subscribers. Our advocacy program is blossoming, empowering those with SCI to benefit from public benefits and to lend their lived experience to legislative and agency initiatives.
• Awarded almost $100,000 in Quality of Life Grants (up to $5K per individual) to 21 individuals in need for items not covered by insurance, including ramps, beds, lifts, and vehicle retrofits.
